Figure 35: Creating FlexConnect groups

It is a good practice to keep the employee VLAN locally switched in the branches so that the traffic does not hairpin across the WAN and the branch users can access the local services even in case of WAN link failures.

We covered three different modes of deployment of Wi-Fi networks in the enterprise, including the Cisco Mobility Express, WLC mode, and FlexConnect mode. As a general recommendation for deploying Wi-Fi network, it is recommended to use the centralized mode, where the number of APs is more than 10. Also, if there are remote branches that are large in size and have a large number of APs, it is recommended to deploy a separate WLC at the branch office. This prevents the traffic from the branches from coming to the central site WLC over the WAN, thereby reducing network delays. Alternatively, the network designer can think of deploying the FlexConnect mode of deployment.
